Welcome to Bioacoustics Procrastinator!

Hi, and thanks for reading my about page. I'm currently a PhD student in bioacoustics at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. I came to love the field towards the end of my undergraduate career at the College of the Atlantic. After finishing with a degree in human ecology (don't ask) I earned a masters in acoustics from Penn State. Now, My primary research interests are how we can use passive acoustics to monitor animals and habitats in order to best manage and conserve them. I'm also a pretty decent snowboard instructor...

Anyway, the goal of this blog is to provide a non-technical overview of various topics in the field of bioacoustics, a research area that covers everything from seal scaring devices (beware any phocid readers) to psycoacoustics, to echolocation in bats and dolphins even to the conservation of forest elephants. Second, and equally important, it gives me a place to stretch my writing legs in preparation for writing my thesis.

Here you will find discussion topics, interesting links and fun videos. Finally, as a new user to PAMGuard software, I will be posting tutorials  in the sincere hopes that they may be useful to others just starting out with this software.

Thanks for reading!
