Welcome and Principles of Marine Bioacoustics Citation Correction

"Hello world"
Welcome to my blog. The primary purpose of this blog is to have a place to park useful notes and interesting reads as they pertain to bioacoustics and, in particular, my PhD. I hope some of you find them useful and or entertaining as well.

Content warning. There will be dolphins. And spelling mistakes.

As my first helpful hint  I would like to post a minor erratum to the otherwise stellar read Principles of Marine Bioacoustics. By Whitlow W.L. Au and Mardi C. Hastings. If any of you are looking for an all-around reference to all things marine-bioacoustics(y) this should be on your priority your go-to list. Everything from fundamentals of sound propagation to pinniped hearing is touched on. However, the reading is rather dense so be prepared to do some background work if you aren't familiar with the topics already.

Awesome book. Go borrow it from the library.

Now to the erratum (mostly for myself because I'm using the reference).

The reference to individualized whistle contours in bottlenose dolphins by Caldwell (1965) on page 491 is incorrect.  The article was published in the exclusive journal "Nature", not the highly selective journal "Science". An extensive search on the Science website will reveal that a search for vol. 207 pg 434 yields a very cool article about Imaging photopolarimeter on Pioneer Saturn.

It is interesting to note that Au and Hastings were not the only ones to make this mistake. McCowan and Reiss (2001) also made the same mistake. This should serve as a healthy reminder to everyone to make sure you, at least, have a copy of the abstract on hand when doing your research. This will save some poor PhD student 20 min of aggravated Google searching down the road.

Happy Successful researching!
